Big Bundle of Potentiality by Kristi Rexhepi

10 05 2016

Hello Champions Alumni, Friends, Family, and Followers,

My name is Kristi Rexhepi and I am a first year champion teaching at Villa Primary School. It’s crazy to think that we more than halfway through our time here on the Island. I have had the pleasure to be paired up with my teaching partner Jenelle and STAMPer Lexi. This was our first week without our STAMPers which is bittersweet. The fact that they are gone and the students are still concerned about Teacher D life back at home is a testament to the impact this program has. This week I have felt more prepared and more confident going into school, it is thanks to all the teachers here and the relationships that we have built with the staff and students at Villa.

Today was a great day all around, it was one of those days were I had a permanent smile on my face. We started off with one of my favourite parts of the day which is prayers and signing worship songs. I joined my grade two students who have so much energy and are so passionate about everything that they do. I absolutely love the fact that music and dance is a major component to the students learning here in Antigua.

After this my teaching partner, Jenelle, and I brought a class that was missing their teacher for the morning into the library. Our students are always curious to learn more about Canada and where we are from. The first part of our morning was spent looking at the world map and finding BC compared to where Antigua is located. After this class we went off to our first PE class with our grade ones, which is full of life skills and fun games. Today’s topic was on patience, I am always amazed at my student’s imagination and their answers they have for me during our discussion. Our second class of the day we had Dr. Sheppard join us for the first time. It was great to see Dr. Sheppard in action, helping us along our lesson. Also for the first time on this trip today we had one of the teacher’s sit outside on our PE class to watch. It is great to see the collaboration from the Antiguan teachers who are willing to learn from us as much as we want to learn from them.

During our lunch hour as per usual, Jenelle and I have to scarf down our lunch before we get bombarded with all the students wanting to use the equipment. Today was a little different as we witnessed for the first time one of the teachers playing with her students. I loved to see that the teacher was promoting physical activity and encouraging everyone to participate. It is moments like this that make you realize the reason we are here, to promote and educate every individual on physical activity and health.

At the end of the school day we were all pleasantly surprised when all of our cars took a detour to Fred’s ice cream. Thank you to all of our STAMPers for the treat; you are the bomb dot com!

Just like one of the lines of the songs today “You are a great BIG BUNDLE of POTENTIALITY”, I believe that every student here, and all of us Champs are so full of potentiality. We are all growing and learning together, and it is all thanks to this awesome program. This program has challenged me in so many ways and helped me grow as a person. I am truly greatly for this opportunity and I would like to thank Joanna Sheppard for allow me to be a part of this amazing program. I would also like to thank my family and friends who have supported me throughout this experience. I can’t wait to go back to school tomorrow and cherish these last couple of days I have with my students.

Sincerely,

Kristi Rexhepi

Sounds like one heck of a day! It is so exciting that you and Jenelle have continued a to build a strong collaboration between the Champions and the Antiguan teachers at Villa. I really belief that that is the power of this program. I am also so impressed with how present you are throughout your days at Villa. Continue to fully participate everyday in every possible activity, the exhaustion you face at the end of the day will be worth it when you return home and think back on your journey! Let the students know that although Teacher D is doing well at home, she misses each and every one of them every moment of the day! I also miss you and Jenelle and am so happy to hear how well you’re doing!
Enjoy your remaining days!
